European jazz-funk of the highest quality, recorded for German music publishers, and thus most difficult to get on so-called “library-records” for synchronization use, was one of the great talents of Heinz Kiessling. Born in 1926 he became one of the most sought after big band leaders in Germany and also succeeded as a composer for film and television scores during his long musical career .
After the war he finished his studies at the Conservatory of Nuremberg, toured as a concert pianist in various countries and was active as a well booked studio musician. Later he joined the RIAS Big Band, played with its own orchestra and founded the music publishing house "Brillant" in 1964 with pianist Werner Tautz, later also the small library label "Quadriga Music" with his wife Monika Kiessling, on which only three LPs were released in small editions (Q1-Q3 = Quadriga Music 1-3).
Kiessling has created over 1200 compositions and constantly worked with stars of the international entertainment scene, including artists such as Luiz Bonfa, Chet Baker and Caterina Valente. The Heinz Kiessling Orchestra also impressed with crystal clear Easy Listening-sound at the highest level in the German TV Shows by Wenche Myhre and Peter Alexander. In 1969 Heinz Kiessling wrote the song "Shadow of the Moon" for Frank Sinatra.
In the opinion of many record collectors and DJs, his later Quadriga Library recordings belong to the best adaptations of American funk music that have ever been produced in Germany. That is why the very rare original LPs of "Q1-Q3" belong to the expensive and globally sought-after collector`s items today, desperately hunted in the digger scenes of Paris, New York, Berlin or Tokyo – "fantastic, undiscovered breaks, beats, loops and samples galore", as the diggers would say.
Another big name in European Library Funk is Peter Jacques (or „Pete Jacques“), born in Franzensbad, Czechoslovakia, in 1935, who first succeeded as a Soloviolonist and Concertmaster. He made his first appearance on the classical circuit at the age of eight, dabbling with jazz during his classical education and won the first price later on at the Zurich Jazz Festival in 1953. After a brief stint with Chet Baker, he joined some of the best jazz combinations in Sweden and Denmark and even sang background on productions of Alice Babs and Povel Ramel during his stay on the Swedish jazz scene.
Always on the experimental side of things, Jacques not only produced a series of legendary recordings in the 1960s with singer Ruth Linn, arranging up to ten voices together in the first multiple recording mode, but also arranged big jazz workshops for German TV, bringing together the best Swedish jazz musicians of the time. As a hosting pianist at the legendary jazz club "Nalen", he accompanied stars like Stan Getz, Lester Young and Benny Bailey. After touring with Toots Thielemans and Jimmy Woode, he recorded the first version of the huge jazz hit "Bluesette" in Stockholm for Metronome Records.
Then he left Sweden in 1964 to work in Germany and live in Munich, where he also arranged for nearly all the well known German bands of that time and became responsible for some of the finest moments in 1970s jazz-funk from Europe. During that time, Jacques mainly composed, recorded and performed for countless music libraries and his own splendid "Pete Jacques Trio". He also became musical director at the Bavaria Filmstudios in co-productions with artists like Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones or Rolf Harris and did various TV specials in Rio for the US company ABC with co-host Sergio Mendes and Brazilian stars like Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Edu Lobo, Jorge Ben, Elis Regina and Dori Caymmi.
Already in 1973, he joined the Swiss Broadcasting Big Band, for which he recorded some memorable concerts featuring personalities like Kai Winding or Art Farmer, then hosting the famous "jazz in concert" series there for almost 10 years, having every known jazz artist as a guest.
